Ryan Gosling has come a long way since his childhood days on The Mickey Mouse Club. In his latest movie, now he’s in the courtroom – or, as lawyers sometimes refer to it, The Mickey Mouse Club.
Many have been anxiously awaiting the return of Anthony Hopkins to the big screen in his classic murdering crazy man type role. Well, you need to wait no longer. In Fracture Anthony Hopkins plays a very successful business man with a gorgeous wife. Unfortunately, she is having an affair. Anthony decides to put an end to the affair by shooting her in the head. He does not hesitate to confess and is thrown in jail. Since he provided a full confession, a plea bargain is likely. But, that all changes when he appears in front of the judge. The District Attorney assigned to prosecute him is played by Ryan Gosling. Gosling just wants to get this over with so he can move on to his new job with a prestigious private law firm. It seems though that Anthony has a plan. Not only is Anthony not going to plea bargain, he's going to represent himself at trial. He thinks he's committed the perfect crime and has no fear of being found guilty and being sent ot prison. That part of his plan goes wrong when Ryan Gosling decides he's going to do whatever it takes to see justice served. Now it's a game of wits and it may be a game to the death.
Fracture is actually more courtroom drama than suspense-thriller. It’s got some graphic violence and a little bit of suspense, but the story is one of those that really all comes down to lawyer stuff. And, the lawyering in this is pretty much on par with any episode of The Practice - you'll figure out the legal loopholes before the movie lawyers do, and you'll be pretty sure it's not legally sound anyway. So, even if you're into courtroom dramas, the story seems a little unrealistic. But the movie is intense and entertaining because of the acting. Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling are both phenomenal, and they've got great chemistry and timing together. So, the battle of wits between them is worth seeing. |
